A paper on industrial policy in
Lebanon was prepared and presented by Dr. Elie Yashouie, an
LCPS research associate, and a professor of Economics at St.
Joseph University. The seminar was held at the American
University of Beirut Alumni Association on the September 28,
1995.
The policy paper outlines the main
problems and opportunities facing the Lebanese industry and
calls for more favorable government policies. The seminar was
attended by 45 economists, academics, businessmen, and
journalists. The presentation was commented on by Mr. Nicholas
Nahass who is a member of the Board of Directors of the
Lebanese Industrialists Association.
The study entitled "Towards
an Industrial Strategy for Lebanon
" was published in
Arabic and was widely circulated to ministers,
parliamentarians, economist and members of the press. It
includes the paper and the discussions.
The seminar was part of a research and
conference program entitled "The
Lebanese Economic Tribune" (LET), organized by
the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies and supported
by the International Center for
Economic Growth (ICEG) and the Center for International Private
Enterprise
(CIPE). The objective of the
LET was to guide research, organize workshops and conferences,
and provide information and analysis on key economic issues.
